| OK, so since I started working I haven't really been able to post anything except a few random little comments. So, now that I have a full 2-day weekend to rest, I thought Id' update the world.....or at least my handful of readers.
Well, I started working on June 26th and in the past 18 days have only had 1 day off. So, this is my Golden Weekend which means I get both weekend days off. It's sweet, especially because I was post-call yesterday and slept from 2pm until 7am.....mm-mmmmm, yummy sleep.
Actually, I've been having a blast. Internship has been a lot of fun. I'm working in the Intensive care unit. The Unit is huge (29 beds) and brand-spanking new (opened in April). Actually, only 19 beds are online right now.
So my day goes a little like this....... I leave the house around 5:45-6:00 and get to the hospital by 6:30. I round on my patients from 6:30 till about 8:00 and then try to make it to Morning Report (lecture) and get a bite to eat. Then we round with the attending from 9am until oh, about 1:30pm. It's pretty excrutiating at times, but it can be a lot of fun too. Lots of teaching and presenting patients to our attending mixed in with borderline humor and laughter. The unit sorta brings out the best, the worst and the wackiest in people.
We have these COWS (Computers-on-wheels) so we can look up chest-x-rays, enter orders, and surf the internet randomly while on rounds. So hospital legend has it that a patient tried to sue the hospital because he thought the doctors were talking about him when they said "where is that cow?" referring to the computer.
Anyways, then we do our work, procedures, etc from 2pm until anywhere between 5-7pm. I think the latest I've gotten out is 7:30 and the earliest is 4:00. I think the hardest part was my first 2 call-nights. We got pretty slammed and I started to hate my pager. But I think I've gotten better at it....or, at least, I've gotten better at faking like I know what I'm doing when the nurses ask, "Doctor Kim, what should I do?" hahaha...... All in all, it's not that bad, and I think I kinda like the pain. hahahaha..... no not really, but I guess I just like the feeling of working hard and being stretched.
I think the best sign is that as I'm driving up the 295 Fwy on my daily 30 minute commute, I keep thinking about how blessed I am to be at a solid program in a cool state and just wanting to do my best today..... and of course, I daydream a little about my girl. |
